With the nights closing in and the increased amount of moisture in the air and on the roads, the danger on the roads also increases. This checklist provides some key tips on winter driving and maintenance that will help to keep you, your family and fellow road users safe.  

Clean the Glass

  • Keep a scraper and de-icer in the car to remove any frozen moisture on the vehicle (don’t use boiling water!)
  • Check the wiper blades for wear and tear and replace if necessary
  • Visibility is crucial in the winter months - keeping glass cleaning liquid in the car to clean the windscreen after snow/ice/rain can help avoid serious issues
  • If icy, start the car beforehand to warm up the vehicle to make sure the windscreen is clear before setting off on your journey

  • Keeping up to date with weather warnings will help to identify the riskier times to travel and inform you with the choice to cancel the journey

Keep an Emergency Kit

  • Always have a pre-prepared bag within the vehicle in case of emergencies, containing:

  • non-perishable food
  • charged portable battery
  • torch
  • hi-vis vest
  • reflective warning triangle

Regular Maintenance

  • Check fluid levels including coolant and make sure they are at the advised level
  • Check the battery as it can be adversely affected by cold temperatures

Check the Tyres

  • The winter cold air can cause tyre pressure to drop so regular checks are strongly recommended
  • Check the tread depth for the winter months and consider switching to winter tyres if living in an area of the UK prone to ice and snow
